Alissa and Johan's Grant Writing Primer

Saturday, March 28, 2 to 4 pm

This workshop is geared to individual visual and media artists, recent graduates and emerging arts professionals. Identifying the resources, tools and methods of application processes of professional arts practices, the Writing Primer will provide an overview of funding available and a step-by-step process for grant and proposal writing using examples. Artists/writers/curators Alissa Firth-Eagland and Johan Lundh will share expertise and provide insight into how to craft a stand-out application from the ground up.

The facilitators will address:

- making contact and building relationships with your funders
– the Anatomy of an Application
– pitching proposals and responding to Calls For Submissions
– applying to international funding opportunities and residencies

Alissa Firth-Eagland is an interdisciplinary artist curator who works in and between video, publication, web-based research, sound, performance, public intervention, installation and gallery exhibition. Her practice makes visible the structures, rules, languages, concerns, and formal manifestations of media. She has coordinated projects for organizations such as the TRANZ ←→ TECH 2003 Toronto International Media Art Biennial, Fado Performance Inc. in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Cultural Human Resources Canada, the Walter Phillips Gallery at the Banff Centre, the first annual Toronto Alternative Arts Fair International 2004, and the Images Festival of Independent Film and Video. In 2006 she was researcher-in-residence at the Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art in Helsinki, Finland, where she looked closely at the practices of Nordic media artists creating works that defy categories of video, animation, installation, intervention, and performance. She is the Director / Curator of Western Front Media Arts in Vancouver, Canada.

Johan Lundh is an artist, curator and writer, splitting his time between Stockholm, Sweden and Vancouver, Canada. He fosters research-based projects that explore connections between social interaction and the mechanics of contemporary art. He holds an MFA and a post-graduate degree in Curatorial Practice from Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. He recently exhibited at Kalmar Konstmuseum (Kalmar), Kulturhuset (Stockholm), and Sörmlands Museums Konsthall (Nyköping). He has curated and co-curated exhibitions and projects for Botkyrka Konsthall (Stockholm), Index the Contemporary Art Foundation (Stockholm), and Kulturhuset (Stockholm). He is a member of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA), and his criticism and text-based art has been published in C magazine, Dagens Nyheter, The Fillip Review, Geist, Konstperspektiv, Paletten, Site Magazine, books and exhibition catalogues. Together with Alissa Firth-Eagland, he is curating a series of double-sided posters, collaboratively produced by Toronto and Vancouver-based artists in a long distance dialogue called Between Us: A Toronto/Vancouver Exchange which will premiere at YYZ Artist’s Outlet in Toronto in June 2008.
