Cornershop Projects presents 2 video projects by Jacqueline Forzelius:
The Community gives me false items (2006)
The Community gives me validity (2007)
Through both video works, Forzelius approaches concepts, processes, and the effects of work and production in a ludic and performative manner, in which questions surrounding the utility, value, and temporality of labor are put forth for closer examination.
In The Community gives me false items (7:45), the artist, to comic and camp effect, takes on the role of an anonymous worker who repeatedly phones unidentified colleagues to discuss, among other topics, the amount, significance, and consequences of work as a reflection of an individual’s social role and value in contemporary society.
Similarly, The Community gives me validity (7:35) opens up questions on the function, time, space, and comprehension of systems of production. By appropriating and miming various forms and terms from the vocabulary of Marxist theory, Forzelius transforms what is seen, a woman playing and moving within the visual space of a corridor, into what can be (mis)understood, a figure bounded in the material and abstract space structured by capitalism.
Jacqueline Forzelius is a Swedish artist currently pursuing a MFA degree at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
